2 000 years of the city's history have left Cologne's residents a rich legacy: the city's Roman layout, Romanesque churches, the Gothic cathedral, Carnival and a legendary and unshakeable joie de vivre. This cheerfulness is tied up with the need of Cologne's inhabitants to converse and celebrate with every visitor to the city. To help this along, they meet up for a Kolsch (a popular local beer) - or even two or three - in one of the numerous small bars, which are almost situated door to door in the different inner-city districts, such as in the Sudstadt, the Belgian quarter or the Kwartier Latang (local dialect, or Kolsch for the Quarter Latin).
